Beacon Secondary Students Immerse Themselves in French Language and Francophone Culture on Educational Trip to Togo

As part of Beacon School’s commitment to global relevance and multilingual excellence, a group of secondary students recently embarked on an exciting French Language and Cultural Immersion Trip to Lomé, Togo. This cross-border experience offered students the chance to strengthen their French language skills while gaining deep insight into the culture, history, and daily life of a Francophone people.

The trip was designed to move language learning beyond the classroom, giving students the opportunity to apply their spoken and written French in authentic settings. From the moment they crossed the border, students engaged in everyday conversations with native speakers, including tour guides, local students, shopkeepers, and community members.

Throughout the trip, students participated in a variety of language-rich and culturally immersive activities. They visited historical sites in Lomé, attended workshops on Togolese customs, and toured local markets where they practiced negotiating and conversing in French. Each interaction boosted their confidence, fluency, and appreciation for the French language.

The experience provided a real-world platform to test language skills in both formal and informal settings; and helped the students pick up current phrases and popular slang, not usually found in their text books.

Teachers who accompanied the students noted a remarkable transformation in their language use, confidence, and global awareness. Students returned more fluent, more reflective, and more inspired to continue learning.
